NOTE: Third-Party Applications for BSD are referred to as either packages and/or ports.

To that, FreeBSD & OpenBSD uses the terms packages and ports. NetBSD uses the term packages, but uses the ports to refer to the "porting" of the entire OS to a diffent hardware platform.

The benefit is, that regardless of which BSD OS you are working with, the system for installing and maintaing Third-Party Applications is about the same.
